A Coaching Success Story

Last month, I outlined how I work and who I help (click HERE to read that post if you missed it). This month I will share a brief ‘success story’. It focuses on one young adult I have worked with over the past 2 years helping them navigate multiple life changes and achieve numerous successes.

This person came to me as a senior in college with a full academic schedule and a job with only short-term potential. School had become a struggle and the job was only taking the focus away from education. They were overwhelmed, not only by the current situation, but by the unknown after graduation. They began to question whether or not they’d even graduate, let alone land a job or internship.

Our first step was to put out the fires. We talked about where to focus their energy, defined and established priorities, and created structure in their day-to-day academic schedule to get them back on track. Work took a back seat as we diligently assessed what was necessary to get grades up and manage the academic workload.

Once that was under control, we worked together on identifying ways to land an internship. We created and implemented an internship search plan that included networking and outreach. Fortuitously, that internship search actually led to a job opportunity in a field they were interested in.

By graduation, there were numerous successes - not only had their grades improved but they were graduating and about to start their career.

After graduating with a job in hand, they then faced confidence issues related to their new career. This is very common during the transition from student to employee and I was able to help them navigate these as well. In this situation, having a coach to point out how you overcame adversity in the past was enough to allow the individual to continue on their journey to increasing their self-confidence.

One of the best things that comes from working together over time is the ability for me to provide young adults with perspective and a reality check. This year, when working together, I was able to remind them of how, 2 years ago, they had been struggling in school with a dead end job. They had not only turned that around but through hard work and commitment to their goals, had actually got a job with opportunities to grow.
I have a passion for working with young people, coaching them through challenges and watching them grow and succeed.
